Join us for an exclusive event at the Queens Gallery providing a wonderful evening of history and charm, which, for a limited period, features a photographic exhibition to mark the 100 year anniversary of Captain Scott's tragic 1911-12 polar expedition and Shackleton's ill-fated journey to the South Pole in 1914-17.
Our VIP speaker is Henry Worsley, expert on the Edwardian ‘heroic period of polar exploration’ which will bring the exhibition to life. Henry retraced ‘Shackleton’s ‘Furthest South’ journey 2008/9 and this October 2011, to celebrate the centenary of Captain Scott’s race against Roald Amundsen in 1911/12, Henry will recreate the same journeys over the original routes with two teams from the British Army - an event never repeated since 1911/12.
About the Queen’s Gallery & Antarctic Exhibition

Re-live the historic period of polar exploration with the Antarctic photography exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery. Witness the journey of Scott and Shackleton’s expedition to the South Pole with an incredible array of pictures in the Queen’s Gallery. In addition to the exhibition, a selection of other Polar material from the Royal Collection can be viewed here including photographs and paintings associated with HRH The Duke of Edinburgh's visit to Antarctica in 1956-7.
This exhibition of Ponting’s dramatic images record Scott’s Terra Nova expedition of 1910–12, which led to the tragic death of five of the team on their return from the South Pole. Hurley’s extraordinary icescapes were taken during Ernest Shackleton’s Polar expedition on Endurance in 1914–17, which ended with the heroic sea journey from Elephant Island to South Georgia. Both collections of photographs were presented to King George V and are today part of the Royal Photograph Collection.
During the evening exhibition a champagne reception will be served. The minimum number of guests for this event is 20-150 guests.
